5 Things I’d Tell My Best Friend Before Going to Oogie Boogie Bash

We just did Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure, and if my best friend told me she was going next week, these are the five things I would immediately tell her.

Not the giant list of every single thing you could possibly do. Not a minute-by-minute itinerary that makes you feel like you’re failing Disney if you get off schedule.

Just the things that actually mattered to us.

Because Oogie Boogie Bash is only five hours long, and especially if you’re doing Disney with little kids, you are not going to do everything. And honestly? You don’t need to.

Here’s what I’d prioritize.

1. Don’t Waste Your Early Entry Standing in a Huge Ride Line

Oogie Boogie Bash guests can enter Disney California Adventure starting at 3 PM, even though the actual party doesn’t begin until 6 PM.

My advice? Don’t immediately use those first few hours standing in a massive line for one of the popular rides. Once the park closes to regular daytime guests and the party officially starts, ride waits can get so much better.

Instead, use that 3–6 PM window to:

• Get your wristbands and event materials
• Eat dinner or grab snacks
• Take family pictures while everyone still looks somewhat put together
• Get oriented and figure out where your must-do activities are
• Let the kids settle in before the party starts

Then save your big must-do rides for later. You only get a few hours of actual party time, so anything you can get out of the way before 6 PM helps.

2. If There’s a Treat Trail You Really Want, Have a Plan

The treat trails are one of the biggest parts of Oogie Boogie Bash.

When you arrive, you’ll get a map showing the different treat trails throughout California Adventure. Many of them feature Disney villains, so it’s not just walking through and grabbing candy, you’re also getting character interaction along the way. But those lines can look absolutely wild through out the night. If there is one villain or treat trail your family really wants to see, figure out where it is before 6 PM.

You have two good options:

Position yourself nearby before the party starts, so you can get into the trail early.

Or…

Skip the opening rush completely and circle back later.

3. Prioritize the Characters Your Kids Actually Care About

This was a big one for us. My son is obsessed with Spider-Man, so meeting Spidey was absolutely worth spending some of our limited party time on. And the interaction was so much better than just taking a quick picture. He got to talk to him, pose with him and actually have a little moment with one of his favorite characters.

That’s the kind of Disney memory I care about.

There are a lot of characters during Oogie Boogie Bash, and some of the character lines can get really long. Instead of feeling like you need to meet everybody, I would have each kid choose one character they would be genuinely excited to see. Maybe you get to more than that. Amazing. But if you leave having met the one character your kid cannot stop talking about? I’d call that a win.

4. Know What Entertainment Is Happening the Year You Go

This is especially important if you’ve been watching old Oogie Boogie Bash TikToks, Reels or YouTube videos while planning your trip. The entertainment can change.

For 2026, Oogie Boogie Bash has a headless horseman walk through and this year they introduced Madame Leota’s Swinging Wake, a Haunted Mansion-inspired street party.

So if you’re watching older content that talks about the previous parade or Headless Horseman experience, make sure you check the current year’s schedule instead of building your entire plan around something that may have changed.

The headless horseman walk through occurs first, then there is 15 minutes of down time and then the parade begins. The day we went the headless horseman walk started at 7:45 and 10:15. We were walking through trying to decide to stop and watch the first round of entertainment or go get on a ride, a cast member heard us talking and said he’d recommend going to the later one. It’s easier to find seating later because people start clearing out.

Always check the Disneyland app on the actual day you’re going for updated entertainment times. Times can vary.

Then decide ahead of time which showing fits your family best.

5. Check out Villains Grove — But You Don’t Need to Rush There

Villains Grove is one of the most anticipated event at Oogie Boogie.

It takes over the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail and transforms it into this immersive spooky nighttime walk-through with lighting, projections, music, fog and different villain-inspired areas.

But there’s one important thing to know:

It needs to be dark.

So there’s really no reason to make Villains Grove your very first stop. It will not open to party people until the sun has gone down. Due to its popularity, it can also build a massive line. One strategy is to visit while a major entertainment offering is happening, because a lot of guests will be gathered elsewhere in the park. Another option is simply waiting until later in the evening when some families have started heading home.

I would definitely put Villains Grove on your must-do list.

Keep in mind it is a little spooky, my kids are not into that, so we opted out of it.

My Biggest Oogie Boogie Bash Tip

If I could give you one piece of advice before your night, it would be this:

Do not try to do everything.

You only have five hours. Before you go, have everyone choose their priorities.

For our family, I’d think about it like this:

One must do ride per kid.
One must meet character per kid.
One must do treat trail.
One entertainment priority.
Villains Grove.

Anything else you accomplish?

Bonus.

That mindset makes Disney with little kids so much more enjoyable because you stop treating the night like a checklist. You’re there to have fun. Somebody will probably need a snack at the worst possible time. Someone might suddenly refuse to wear the costume they begged you to buy. You might abandon a plan because your kid spots Spider-Man across the park.

That’s okay.

Those are usually the moments they remember anyway.
